Dr. Moss J. Fenberg is a board-certified, fellowship-trained retinal surgeon recognized by the American Society of Retinal Specialists (ASRS) as an expert in the care of all medical and surgical diseases of the retina, vitreous, and uvea. His specialty involves the management of macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusion, retinal tear, retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane, macular hole, retinal and choroidal tumor, inflammatory ocular disease or uveitis, retinal dystrophy, vitreous disorders, and complications of ocular trauma. Dr. Fenberg is also an expert in the surgical management of complex cataract repair including suture-less intraocular lens implantation techniques, combined vitrectomy-cataract extraction techniques, and pupillary trauma.
Dr. Fenberg sees patients in Durango and Cortez, Colorado as well as in Farmington, New Mexico. He provides surgical care at Colorado’s #1-ranked Animas Surgical Hospital, as well as at the Four Corners Ambulatory Surgical Center in Farmington, New Mexico.
In addition to medical and surgical excellence, Dr. Fenberg has a strong interest in the evolving healthcare landscape and the role of independent, physician-owned medical practices in this changing environment. In 2013 Dr. Fenberg founded Southwest Eye Consultants in Durango, Colorado, now the Four Corners Regions’ largest multispecialty, multilocation subspecialty ophthalmology practice focused on providing world-class medical and surgical eye care.
In 2016 Dr. Fenberg co-founded Southwest Eye Research Center, creating the area’s only ophthalmic clinical trial site, and offering the Four Corners community access to novel sight-saving therapies available only at tertiary academic medical centers or in larger cities throughout the United States. Dr. Fenberg is the principal investigator on multiple clinical trials and has published articles in peer-reviewed journals. In addition, he and his partners regularly sponsor continuing medical education events throughout the region to educate and improve the quality of care in the Eye Care community.
In 2019 Dr. Fenberg developed the practice’s current medical facilities — Rocket Medical Plaza in a growing mixed-use area of Durango, Colorado — and was instrumental in the development of the area’s only outpatient ambulatory surgical center, now operated as Animas Surgical Center at Escalante. This outpatient surgical facility provides some of the region’s lowest-cost surgical care options for many procedures.
Dr. Fenberg completed his premedical studies with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. He then matriculated to the prestigious Wake Forest University Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. During this time Dr. Fenberg was the distinguished recipient of multiple scholarships including the North Carolina Board of Governor’s Medical Scholarship given to promising young clinician-scientists, as well as the Wake Forest University School of Medicine Academic Merit Scholarship. These recognitions provided Dr. Fenberg with a full-tuition, four-year scholarship during his medical training. Throughout medical school, Dr. Fenberg received numerous awards for his work protecting the vision of underprivileged populations. These honors included being named an Albert Schweitzer Medical Fellow and Scholar, and a Wake Forest University Medical Missionary Scholar. Dr. Fenberg worked internationally with the World Health Organization (WHO) assisting the blind in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, as well as locally among Winston-Salem’s underprivileged population where he established a philanthropic organization among the area’s eye care providers for the provision of sight-saving care.
Dr. Fenberg completed his Medical Internship with the University of Missouri’s Department of Family Medicine in Columbia, Missouri. He then completed his Ophthalmology Residency at the Mason Eye Institute, also in Columbia, Missouri. In addition to serving as Chief Resident, Dr. Fenberg was an active clinician-scientist during this time — presenting research findings in both local and national meetings, including at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), and the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). Dr. Fenberg’s research interests included the surgical implantation of artificial silicone retinal micro-photodiode arrays in animal models of Retinitis Pigmentosa, mutational etiologies in Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis, long-term outcomes in acquired Fungal Endophthalmitis in hospitalized patients, and in understanding causal etiologies of Post-Vitrectomy Complex Cataract Surgery.
Dr. Fenberg then completed an additional two-year medical and surgical Vitreoretinal Fellowship at Boston University School of Medicine in Boston, Massachusetts. During these years Dr. Fenberg was recognized for his surgical ability and clinical acumen. As a Retinal Fellow he served as an attending physician in the supervision of ophthalmology residency training, presented numerous ophthalmology grand rounds and retinal case conferences to university faculty, residents, and medical students, and was recognized as a leader for his interdisciplinary teaching abilities.
For more than a decade Dr. Fenberg has called the Four Corners Region his home. He and his wife, Tamra have loved raising their family here, and have enjoyed being a part of the greater civic community in building the area’s premier sub-specialty ophthalmology practice, Southwest Eye Consultants.
Dr. Fenberg is an avid outdoorsman and endurance triathlete. When not providing subspecialty eyecare, he is with his family mountain biking, river rafting, backpacking, climbing, skiing, or simply being together among the natural wonders of the earth. Dr. Fenberg has enjoyed coaching the local high school wrestling team for many years. He loves language learning, including Hungarian fluency. He also gives of his time in civic service through his local church congregation.
